A Brief History of the Honda Pilot
The Honda Pilot came off the production line in 2002 as the 2003 model. It has gone through four production generations and has seen some major facelifts, updates, and enhancements over the years.
The debut model had a respectable 3.5-liter V-6 engine that generated a powerful 242 pound-feet of torque and 240 horsepower. However, that engine only lasted a year, as the 2005 version replaced this with a drive-by-wire throttle engine that improved its horsepower to 255 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. The transmission also improved in 2005, with a smoother transmission between gears. By 2006 all-wheel-drive became a standard feature. Like all other model years in this generation, this one had a five-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Some attractive design changes came in 2004, 2005, and 2006, with the latter being the most significant. That year, the Pilot got a new fascia, grille, and front headlights. The Honda Pilot EX trim got improved wheels in 2006. In 2007, two new colors arrived as available choices, while the Pilot got two new trims, the VP and the SE, in 2008.
In 2008, the Pilot announced its second generation at the North American International Auto Show. Five trims were available: LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and SE. The standard engine for this year was a 3.5-liter V-6 i-VTEC. It made 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. A voice-activated navigation system made its arrival in 2011. The following year, it came with alloy wheels and a revised front fascia. Some enhanced tech features began showing up in the 2013 models. That year, a rearview camera became a standard feature. In addition, a USB connector, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and wireless audio streaming were among the big highlights. In 2015, the last year of this generation, the Honda Pilot got a power moonroof as a standard feature on the SE trim.
Currently, the Honda Pilot is in its third generation of production. It started production in 2015 and was ready to go on sale in June. The exterior got a sportier, sleeker look once the third generation got underway. The third generation might be best known for introducing some driver-assist safety features. Some of the safety measures in the Pilot are the collision mitigation braking system, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and road departure mitigation. Entertainment improved in 2017 with streaming media. In addition, the Honda Pilot had some minor redesigns for the years 2019, 2020, and 2021.
